Theme 1: Information processing in the brain circuits that realise perception, prediction, memory, cognition control and decision making
Using measurement technologies that span multiple levels of brain activity to study cortical networks, computational principles, and microcircuits for cognition.

Surface reconstruction of human visual cortex overlaid with grid lines depicting cortical depths from superficial (red) to deep (purple) layers. Using high-field, high-resolution fMRI at 7 Tesla, Prof Lars Muckli’s group showed for the first time that the brain’s internal representations of the world are fed back to superficial layers of sensory cortex.
Clinical 7T neuroimaging research
Theme 2: Neurobiology of response to disease mechanism and injury
A programme of interdisciplinary, translational research focussed on the neurobiological mechanisms of behavioural phenotypes such as depression, fatigue and chronic pain resulting from injury to the nervous system and inflammation.

Theme 3: Development of coils and parallel transmit imaging capabilities
Development of novel radiofrequency (RF) coils and parallel-transmit (pTx) technology is essential to fully exploit the capabilities of ultra-high field 7T MRI.
Research Leads

A novel 7T head coil developed in house at ICE and badged as the 'Glasgow Coil' provides improved whole-brain coverage (lower right) in contrast to the current commercial option (lower left). Additional advantages of the Glasgow Coil are its open-faced design to reduce claustrophobia and allow subject monitoring, and its dual-mode functionality to support imaging in single-transmit, sTx mode (currently used for clinical diagnosis) and parallel-transmit, pTx mode (currently used for research and clinical validation) in a single device.
Extending 7T imaging diagnostics
Theme 4: Extending capability of diagnostics across the human body
Extending imaging diagnostics allowing for NHS applications, industrial collaborations, and with potential for developing impact cases. Clinical research across imaging techniques including clinical radiology, cardiovascular, tumour and stroke imaging.
