  Recovering tropical forests grow back nearly twice as fast with nitrogen

  In a new paper published in the journal Nature Communications, researchers from the University of Glasgow in the UK and the Cary Institute in the USA suggest that that if recovering tropical forests had enough nitrogen in their soils, they might absorb up to an additional 820 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year for a decade.

  Glasgow Libraries launch Wintering Well boxes to tackle SAD this winter

  Professor Hester Parr (GES) said: “It's particularly apt and appropriate that our city library service has joined with us at the university, to try and help with the experience of SAD in Glasgow, a place well known for low light, rain and long winters. Our original research programme, which lies beyond the Wintering Well at the Library programme, worked with Glasgow residents to co-produce creative ways of managing through this demanding season."

  Human-made materials could make up as much as half of some Scottish beaches

  The natural sands of beaches along the Firth of Forth are being mixed with significant amounts of human-made materials like bricks, concrete, glass and industrial waste, new research has revealed. A detailed survey of six beaches led by a team from the University of Glasgow has found that these mineral-based materials, known as anthropogenic geomaterials, now make up far more of the beach surface than previously realised.
