About Us

The Hunterian is delighted to announce that Scottish illustrator Annabel Wright has been shortlisted for a 2026 V&A Illustration Award for her image created for the exhibition ‘Views of Glasgow: A Window into Communities’.

Her illustration is one of eight shortlisted in the Advertising & Commercial category of the prestigious, biennial competition celebrating excellence in contemporary illustration.

Views of Glasgow exhibition posterCommissioned by The Hunterian specifically for the exhibition’s marketing campaign, Annabel’s illustration captures the exhibition’s central themes — community, place, and Glasgow’s layered histories. The show was co curated with members of the Woodlands community and brings together iconic paintings of the city with objects, artworks and archival material.

As no single artwork in the exhibition could fully convey its breadth, The Hunterian turned to Annabel to create an original illustration that would give visitors an immediate sense of what to expect. Her distinctive style complements many of the works on display while offering a fresh, contemporary entry point for audiences.

The illustration appears across the full suite of exhibition materials, from posters and banners to digital assets and wayfinding. It incorporates key stories featured in the show, including the 1967 children’s protest to save the ‘Venny’ adventure playground, the Woodlands People of Colour quilt making group and the time travelling robin from the children’s book ‘What Starts Here Stops Here’.

Commissioning a new artwork also added another layer of public engagement, giving audiences a visual narrative that has become part of the exhibition’s story and legacy. Additional illustrations by Annabel — including material from ‘What Starts Here Stops Here’ — are also displayed within the exhibition.

First established in 1972, the V&A Illustration Awards celebrate outstanding work created for the UK market by illustrators from around the world. The Awards are generously supported by The Linder Foundation and the Moira Gemmill Memorial Fund.

Winners will be announced on 1 July 2026.

Views of Glasgow: A Window into Communities’ is at the Hunterian Art Gallery until Sunday 26 April 2026. Entry is free.
