The Critical Technology Innovation Fund (CTIF) aims to support the next stage in an innovation’s commercial development journey, supporting projects that align to the sectors of Quantum, Photonics, Semiconductors & Biomedical Engineering.

The Programme offers support through two distinct Pathways:

This fund enables projects to focus on the market discovery activities of innovative ideas that may have potential to become an innovation or commercial opportunity. CTIF will assist project leaders to test and validate ideas and concepts, identifying gaps that need to be filled on an innovation journey and demonstrating the potential of new and groundbreaking critical technology discoveries.

CTIF Pathway 1 aims to enhance market awareness and deepen the understanding of potential technology applications by supporting market discovery activities. This fund is ideally suited to applicants looking to explore the potential of their early-stage project to understand if their project addresses a market or customer need.

The fund is now open to applications with a deadline of 12:00 (noon) on 18 March 2026.

How much funding is available?

The fund welcomes projects of up to £10,000 but we request that applicants consider what they need to conduct eligible activities. The projects must be completed within 6 months of acceptance of the contract award letter.

What are the eligibility criteria?

This call is open to staff members at the University of Glasgow who have a project idea and meet the following entry-level criteria:

  1. Demonstrate interest and ambition to explore an innovation journey, and discover if there is market, commercial or industrial interest for a concept or technology.
  2. Require support to engage andvalidate market or customer interest and can undertake customer discovery activities by September 2026.
  3. There is potential for intellectual property protection (could be unpublished data/know-howor patent filing), and a discussion with the University Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Team has taken place (successful projects will be requested to engage with the IPC Team as part of project set up activities)

Application selection process

All applications will be checked for eligibility, and thereafter eligible applications will be assessed by a small expert panel comprising commercialisation and economic development expertise from the University of Glasgow and its partners.  The panel will assess and prioritise applications with respect to:

  • Overall alignment with the purpose of the fund
  • The stage ofconcept/protype development and intellectual property

This fund enables projects to focus on the technical development of innovative ideas that may have potential for a spin-out venture or worthy of exploration through other commercialisation or industrial routes.  CTI will assist project leaders to validate and mature these innovations, identifying gaps that need to be filled on an innovation journey and realising the potential of new and groundbreaking critical technology discoveries.

CTI Pathway 2 supports the derisking and demonstration of projects through access to expertise and equipment at the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre (JWNC). More information on the JWNC and it capabilities can be found on the JWNC website - https://www.gla.systa-s.com/research/az/jwnc/
