If you need to travel as part of your studies or paid work through the University, some important updates are coming soon to help keep you and your information safe.
From early May, the Travel Risk, Insurance and Compliance Approval Portal (TRICAP) will include a few extra questions when you register your trip.

Does this apply to all travel?

Only if the trip is registered through the University.

This update does NOT apply to any travel you arrange yourself, such as:

  • Travelling to and from your home country for your studies
  • Holidays
  • Personal trips not funded, organised or approved by the University

If you don’t register the trip in TRICAP, these changes do not affect you.

What’s changing?

We’re adding quick checks to help us spot when a trip might involve higher cybersecurity risks. This helps us support you properly before you go.

Why the changes?

Most travel is low-risk for cyber issues, but some destinations and some types of information can attract unwanted attention. Risks may be higher if you’re:
travelling to countries with active cybersurveillance
carrying research or project data
taking devices that store personal information
We want to reduce the chance of your personal or university data being accessed while abroad.

What will you see in TRICAP?

When you submit a travel request, you’ll be asked:

  • Where you’re travelling
  • Whether you’ll access or carry sensitive data
  • Whether we need to put extra cyber protections in place

This allows us to help with things like secure data access (e.g., VPN), safer handling of information, and guidance on what to take with you.

Do I need to do anything now?

No action needed yet. We’ll send reminders, visuals, and a short walkthrough video before the changes go live. In the meantime, you can check out the attached FAQs for further information.
