As part of our ongoing commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV), the University has joined the EmilyTest Network, becoming part of a growing community of universities and colleges across the UK and Ireland working to improve how GBV is prevented, identified and responded to in higher education.

EmilyTest is a charity which works with institutions to address gaps in awareness, support and practice around GBV, helping to ensure students are met with informed, compassionate and effective responses when they seek help.

Joining the EmilyTest Network signals the University’s continued dedication to strengthening its approach to gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, intervention, and support. Membership provides access to specialist learning sessions, collaboration workshops, and a library of evidence informed tools and resources designed to support safer student communities.

As part of the Network, the University will also have the opportunity to take part in regular self‑reflection to review current practice and identify areas for ongoing improvement, while learning alongside other institutions facing similar challenges.

Sara Carter, University of Glasgow Gender Equality Champion, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Social Sciences, said: “Addressing Gender‑Based Violence requires a whole‑university approach. Through joining the EmilyTest Network, we are reinforcing our commitment to prevention, education and meaningful cultural change, while making sure our response continues to evolve and improve. This step signals our collective responsibility to eradicating Gender-Based Violence in all its forms and work toward a university where everyone feels empowered, valued and safe."

Duncan Calvert, President of the Students' Representative Council, said: “It is positive to see the University joining the EmilyTest Network and becoming part of a wider community of institutions committed to improving how gender-based violence is addressed across higher education.

Students have consistently called for stronger accountability, clearer support systems and a culture where survivors are listened to and supported. We hope this marks a meaningful step forward in that work, and an opportunity for the University to continue learning from best practice across the sector.

The SRC will continue working closely with the University to ensure student voices, and particularly the voices of survivors, remain central to discussions around GBV prevention, support and accountability at UofG."

This work forms part of the University’s wider commitment to student wellbeing, safety and equality – and to creating an environment where all students can study, live and thrive free from violence, harassment and abuse.

We will keep you updated as this work develops and as new resources and learning opportunities become available for colleagues and students.
