Multiculturalism, racialisation & nationhood in contemporary Scottishness
Published: 22 May 2026
22nd May 2026: This talk draws on qualitative inquiry with politicians, civil servants, and civil society stakeholders in Scotland, to explore how the administrative state grapples with processes of racialization.
It focuses in particular on how various actors describe reshaping the idea of “Scottishness,” exploring how Scotland’s self‑image as a civic and inclusive nation is expressed through its public philosophies, political narratives, and policy approaches. The talk illustrates these themes with examples relating to institutional racism, religious diversity, and the perceived boundaries of multicultural accommodation. Ultimately, it reflects on these tensions and how they contribute to Scotland’s continually evolving national story.
