Britain’s new border runs through its universities

16th January 2026: A number of Britain’s universities are cutting back or pausing altogether their recruitment of students from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
They cite the Government’s stricter immigration policies and the tightening of visa-sponsorships. But Nasar Meer argues these actions by universities amount to discrimination of students on the basis of nationality, something explicitly forbidden by the Equality Act.
