The Adam Smith Business School was proud to welcome Professor Daron Acemoglu, one of the world’s leading economists, to the University of Glasgow. An Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Acemoglu was awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of economics. As part of his visit, he delivered a captivating talk in our prestigious Adam Smith Distinguished Lecture Series — an event that brings renowned thinkers to share insights on today’s most pressing economic and social challenges. In his lecture, Professor Acemoglu reflected on Adam Smith’s enduring influence, noting that his ideas remain highly relevant in an era of rapid technological change, shifting market structures, and urgent global challenges such as climate change. He emphasised that Smith’s vision extended far beyond the “invisible hand,” underlining the importance of strong institutions, effective regulation, and shared values to ensure markets serve the common good. Linking these ideas to the present day, Professor Acemoglu urged economists and policymakers to think critically about how market forces and technology can be harnessed to build a fairer, more sustainable society.
