Geohumanities: critical histories and creative geographies

This theme connects geography and the humanities, attending to histories and philosophies of geography, geology, exploration, technology and the human sciences. Our work also includes methodological experiment for public engagement and impact, informed by and contributing to research-led creative practice in cultural geography.

Key foci include:

  • Histories of science – critically reconstructing logics, spaces and practices of past scientific enquiry
  • Geography and philosophy – thinking with social theory and philosophy to interpret the past, make sense of the present and inform the future
  • Cultural geographies of practice – practising novel engagement with and in arts collections, archives, galleries and green spaces, engaging a range of publics and community groups
  • Curating lived experience – co-designing creative means of communicating lived experience, particularly in terms of mental ill-health
  • Arts-science, creative collaborations and commissions – collaborating with artists, writers and storytellers to shape an applied geohumanities

Our GES Creative Impact Lab is a key site through which we practise our critical and collaborative geohumanities.
