Health Economics and Health Technology Assessment

The Byres Hub Community Day brought our research directly into the heart of the community on Saturday 28 March, as the School of Health and Wellbeing’s Byres Community Hub opened Clarice Pears to the public for a day of interactive engagement.

Heather Fraser, Emma Steel, Robert Heggie and Nishant Jaiswal invited members of the public to play an interactive game (with bean bags!) on how to allocate a fixed mental‑health budget across a range of possible interventions, from talking therapies and peer support to exercise prescriptions and nutrition programmes.

Participants were invited to weigh up key factors such as cost‑effectiveness, equity, patient preferences, and prevention vs treatment approaches. In the game, each target represented a different decision-making factor. By choosing where to throw their bean bags, participants cast their vote on how they would prioritise limited resources, turning complex decision‑making into an engaging, accessible, and thought‑provoking experience.
