Abstract

An alternating sign matrix is a square matrix in which each entry is -1, 0 or 1, and along each row and column the nonzero entries alternate in sign, starting and ending with a 1.  Many intriguing combinatorial results for such matrices have been obtained using connections with the integrable statistical mechanical six-vertex model.  In this talk, I’ll review some of these results for standard alternating sign matrices, and I’ll present some recent results for certain variations of alternating sign matrices.
