Dress Code

For your University of Glasgow graduation ceremony, regardless of your prior graduation status, it is essential to adhere to a formal dress code that befits the occasion. Please take note of the following attire guidelines:

→ Dark trousers and jacket, skirt, or a suit paired with a white shirt or blouse

→ White or dark dress

→ Dark shoes or boots

→ If you choose to wear a tie, it should be black

Additionally, please be aware that hats are not traditionally worn during our graduation ceremonies. While these ceremonies are indeed celebratory in nature, we maintain a formal dress code that reflects the significance of the event.

We also welcome the wearing of national or military dress, should you wish to do so, as part of this formal attire.

Academic Dress Hire

 

Graduands are expected to wear academic dress (a gown and hood) for their graduation ceremony. Hood colours vary depending on the award being conferred. A full list of approved hoods is available on the Academic Policy & Governance webpages.
 
Gown Hire

Academic dress is available to hire for University of Glasgow graduation ceremonies. The University works with an appointed supplier who provides gowns and hoods in the correct styles and colours for our awards, and most graduands choose to hire their academic dress this way.

If you plan to hire academic dress, please note the following:

  • Book in advance: Gown hire opens at the same time as enrolment. Graduands are strongly encouraged to make arrangements as early as possible and no later than three weeks before their ceremony.
  • Collection on the day: When collecting your gown, please bring your booking or order confirmation with you.
