The Hunterian
The Hunterian at the University of Glasgow is home to one of the world’s most significant collections of work by the American‑born painter and printmaker James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903).
The Whistler Collection features over 800 of his artworks including 80 oil paintings, several hundred drawings, watercolours and pastels, and over 1,500 impressions of his etchings and lithographs.
The collection also includes an exceptional body of Whistler’s artist’s materials, such as brushes, etching plates, and printmaking tools, offering rare insight into his working processes and technical experimentation. Together, these holdings form a major resource for the study of Whistler’s life and work.
The Hunterian also houses the principal collection of work by Whistler’s wife, the artist Beatrix Whistler (1857–96). Numbering more than 250 items, among them oil paintings, drawings, watercolours and etchings, this material allows for a fuller understanding of artistic practice within Whistler’s circle and gives long‑overdue recognition to Beatrix’s own career.
A small selection of works by Whistler and Beatrix can be viewed in the Hunterian Art Gallery as part of the permanent collection. Visit The Hunterian website for details opening hours and to search the collection online.
