Research title: Organising game workers: Towards better conditions in the Scottish video game industry
Research summary
My research looks at developments in worker organising in the Scottish video game industry.
It will track the motivations behind worker organising, as well as how workers and management conceive their relationship. The goal is to understand how organising efforts differ from more traditional industries and what this can teach us about contemporary industrial relations.
Growing disquiet in video games correlates with a global wave of collectivist spirit as workers in different non-traditional industries start their own struggle for unionisation. As a case study, the Scottish video game industry works as a microcosm of wider issues in contemporary capitalism: outsourcing production to poorer countries; immaterial labour; and the merging of work with play. However, the body of work surrounding labour disputes in the video game industry remains small—this project seeks to rectify this.
