Research title: Dewey and Democratic Education in Republican China, 1920–1945: Reception, Contestation and Indigenisation

Research summary

My research focuses on John Dewey's theory of democratic education and its influence, critiques, and responses in China. The study will start by clarifying Dewey's concepts of democracy and democratic education, followed by an exploration of how his ideas resonated in China after his visit in 1919. It will delve into the introduction of Dewey's theories to China in the 20th century, their impact on Chinese education, and the criticisms they faced.

The research highlights the lasting influence of Dewey's approach to democratic education on Chinese educational thought during the 20th century. Additionally, it seeks to re-evaluate Dewey's ideas today, emphasizing their continued relevance and potential for shaping contemporary educational discussions in China.
