Dr Steve Brown

Biography

I joined the University of Glasgow in July 2023. Prior to this, I was a lecturer in English language and TESOL, programme leader of the MEd TESOL, and Director of Studies of the English Language Unit at the University of the West of Scotland. Before moving to higher education in 2018, I worked for many years in the Scottish further education sector as an ESOL lecturer, curriculum leader, and TESOL educator. During this time, I completed an EdD at the University of Glasgow, with the focus of my dissertation being on the role of college ESOL programmes in facilitating the settlement of migrants in Scotland. 

In my earlier career, I worked as a volunteer English teacher in Mongolia, and spent several years in the private language teaching sector, working in various countries as an English teacher, teacher trainer and director of studies. I also have an MSc in Applied Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh, a TQFE from the University of Stirling, and the Cambridge DTEFLA. 

Research interests

My research interests include ESOL/English language policy, with a particular focus on the emancipatory potential of ESOL and its role in facilitating social justice. I am also interested in English language teaching as a global profession, which involves exploring diverse areas such as translanguaging and multilingualism, curriculum/materials design, native speakerism, teacher education, the role of capitalism in English language teaching, and the decolonisation and internationalisation of higher education.
